A Black Eye For Black Cherry

I happened across a bottle of Virgil's Micro Brewed Black Cherry Cream Soda recently and decided to give it a shot, based on my previous experiences with Virgil's Root Beer and my recent foray into the world of Cheerwine.

The first thing that hits you with Virgil's is a strong cherry scent that is coupled with hints of cane sugar and an almond-like scent. It has a nice soda carbonation, but it doesn't really add anything to the mix. There is a light vanilla taste that does mix very well with the black cherry flavour. The cherry is also a nice black cherry flavour and not a maraschino flavour, that's a nice change from some of the cherry beverages on the market. The almond flavouring is also a major player in the taste of this Soda and, in combination with the others it's not that good a mix.

While the Soda has a creamy mouth feel it manages to leave a sweet, cherry flavoured coating on the tongue that adds up to an unpleasant aftertaste experience. As Black Cherry flavoured Sodas go, Virgil's just isn't up to snuff.

Ingredients:

Purified Carbonated Water
Unbleached Cane Sugar
Vanilla Extract
Black Cherry Flavor
Natural Flavors
Malic Acid

Virgil's Black Cherry Cream Soda gets a 4/10.

i buy it at wild oats. the shits delicious. much better than boylan black cherry that's available at trader joe's. until i make it out to galco's in l.a. that's all i got to sample aside from the majors. I disagree with the review.

I beg to differ with the reviewer above. I think Virgil's BC Cream Soda is among the best there is out there. Of course every palat is different, so yemv. But it's absolutely tops on my list...along with their root beer.

Good stuff, the reviewer had difficulty with the "almond" taste.
I did not associate the cream taste with almond, it reminded of good old cream soda taste. I never walk by an opportunity to purchase this drink.
